"Chairman's Post Carnival Comments - 2009"
Many thanks to everyone who came and watched the procession and helped fill our buckets with much appreciated cash!.
It came as a a surprise to the Committee to receive the following anonymous communication:
I think it is fairly snotty to say "we have seen no evidence of volunteers coming forward to help". Especially as you say "despite" their being press coverage. That essentially makes it sound as if what you're really saying is "there's no carnival this year and you, people of Felixstowe, are to blame as you haven't bothered to get involved". Perhaps people weren't fully aware of how or when to get involved or maybe, you generally take a snotty, condescending attitude. Try to put a more positive and upbeat spin on matters and treat people nicely and they'll be a lot more willing to help! Frankly I find the current tone dissappointing and just plain old rude!
Are we being "snotty" - we might have been to people who offer us help but since there were only a couple of people over the last year then I think we would have known. It might appear that the people of Felixstowe have themselves caused the cancellation of the park event for lack of sponsorship/support, but it isn't for lack of opportunity to cantact us and help. The writer of the above communication managed to contact us quickly enough on the Sunday morning following the procession, this page constantly asks people to contact us and articles about the Carnival in the press carry contact details. My comments page that has been on this website this year is listed below - is there anything in that that offends. If so, we would like to know.
This was the 2008/2009 comnments page:
It is with great regret that the Carnival Committee have decided to cancel the usual weekend of entertainment in the park. The Carnival Procession will still take place as usual so get your entries in and let us see your amazing float designs. There are two reasons why the park weekend has been cancelled, both of which are extremely important. Firstly with the current economic climate most companies that make donations are not really in a position to do so this year and we cannot afford to run the weekend at a loss. Secondly, despite advertising in the press the weekend needs a lot of hands-on support which we have seen no evidence of people volunteering. Also, as is said below every year, the Committee needs members to organise the weekend and again there is no evidence of volunteers coming forwatd to help.
Important: I know this seems a long way away but we would like to know what you can suggest as a theme for the 2010 carnival since, up to now, we have always left it until after the current Carnival, but it would be sensible to give the talented minds out there as much time as possible to decide on the decoration for their float. So for 2010 we thought it would be nice to see what the procession entrants can think up to test their skills. If you have an idea for a theme please use our contact page to let us know of your ideas.
Again, I would appeal to you to let the committee know what you liked/disliked and what you would like to see during future Carnival Weekends. Can you suggest a theme, different attractions for the park or what is your type of music? It would be nice to see the Carnival Weekend continue to develop in the future, but for that to happen we need more comments to help us provide the attractions for the future.

As for the future?
The following couple of paragraphs are similar each year, in fact, they are exactly the same as last year, but the message in them is as true now as it was when they were first penned.
As I have said every year, the Felixstowe Carnival Weekend is only possible because of a combination of very hard work by the Committee and the overwhelming generosity of local businesses and the local community. When apathy has all too often ruled in other areas of the country, when it comes to Felixstowe, you should be very proud of yourselves and your Carnival... I know that I am.
Despite the continued success of the Carnival Weekend, or because of it, we still need plenty of help to stage the event and I would like to thank the people who gave some of their time to help with setting up and running the Weekend. The Committee would welcome any extra members or more assistance in any form that you can offer. If you can only spare a couple of hours during the weekend then we can certainly find something for you to help on and reduce the strain on everyone else!

Enjoy your Carnival Weekend.
Best wishes,
